Filey sits on the North Yorkshire coast just along from our base in Scarborough, known for its long sandy beach and Filey Brigg. We work across Filey and the surrounding villages of Hunmanby and Muston.
The town's character was set in the Victorian era. The Crescent — a row of early-Victorian villas built in 1835 and later joined together as the Royal Crescent Hotel — drew visitors including archbishops and a Liberal prime minister as Filey grew into a quieter, more genteel alternative to the busier resort at Scarborough. That period left Filey with a real concentration of period property: 26 buildings across the town are listed on the National Heritage List for England, almost all of it 18th- and 19th-century housing stock, concentrated around the Old Town, the Crescent and the town centre.
Much of that Old Town, town centre and sea-facing area sits within the Filey Conservation Area, which covers the older core of the town rather than all of it. Being inside the conservation area doesn't rule work out, but it does mean the council looks harder at anything visible from the street, and some projects need a planning application that wouldn't elsewhere. We check the exact address against the conservation area boundary at the site visit, before quoting, rather than assuming either way.
