Pocklington is a market town in the East Riding of Yorkshire, a short way east of York and around an hour's drive inland from our base in Scarborough. We work across Pocklington and the surrounding area.
The town has traded as a market since medieval times — a four-day fair was granted in 1245, and a weekly Saturday market by royal charter in 1300 — and that long commercial history left it with corn mills, a brewery and a scatter of Georgian and Victorian buildings still standing in the centre, protected today within a conservation area designated by East Riding of Yorkshire Council in 2009. Pocklington School, founded in 1514, is the town's other well-known landmark — William Wilberforce, who led the campaign to abolish the slave trade, was a pupil there in the 1770s. The old Pocklington Canal, cut in 1814 to link the town to the Humber, still runs south of the town today.
