Kirkbymoorside is a market town on the southern edge of the North York Moors, around 25 miles inland from our base in Scarborough and a few miles from Helmsley. We work across the town and the wider Ryedale area around it.
The town has traded on the same spot since at least 1254, when it was granted market rights under the Wake family — the Wednesday market recorded that year still runs today, one of the longest-running in the country. A fortified manor house was built to the north of the town in the early 15th century by the Neville family; only a fragment of it survives, in what's now Manor Vale. The town centre, still built up close along its old market streets, has been protected within a conservation area since 1976.
