Whitby's old town, either side of the harbour and the River Esk, carries one of the densest concentrations of listed buildings on this stretch of coast — over 400 buildings within the Whitby Conservation Area alone, most of them houses and cottages built close together on steep, narrow streets from the town's shipbuilding and fishing years. The newer housing on the west side of the river, which grew up after the railway arrived in the 1840s, gives more room to work with, but on either side of the Esk, access for scaffolding, skips and materials is something we plan for at the site visit, not an afterthought.
