Rising damp usually shows as a tide mark up to about a metre from the floor on ground-floor walls, often with salts on the surface. Condensation tends to appear in corners, behind furniture and on cold external walls, with black mould. Penetrating damp shows as patches that get worse after rain. A survey tells you which before any treatment is sold.
